This may include projects such as extensions, renovations, loft conversions, installations of dormers or velux windows, demolition of existing structures/extension, etc.
We can help you today by undertaking the required bat survey and issue of a high-quality report that not only meets the criteria required by the LPAs but fits their tight timescales, all at an affordable, cost-effective price!
Why Choose Focus Environmental Consultants for Your Bat Survey?
Focus Environmental Consultants have an in-house team of licensed bat surveyors with extensive experience of delivering results on a wide variety of different projects. We have a 100% track record in obtaining development (mitigation) licenses to support schemes affecting bat roosts.
In addition, we can obtain bat conservation licenses to undertake specific works to the direct benefit of bats and their roosts. We are also able to register suitable sites under a Bat Mitigation Class Licence (low impact), which fast-tracks the normal licensing timescales. Call us today to see if your site qualifies.

What Happens If I Have Bats? & Other FAQ’s
What does the Bat Survey involve?
You will be assigned a personal Lead Ecologist, who will contact you to arrange a suitable survey date. They will then survey your property (or structure) both internally and externally for evidence of bats as well as possible bat access points.
What kind of access do you need?
As well as viewing the outside of the structure, the surveyor will need to access the interior of the property to survey loft areas and any basements/cellars. We will bring our own telescopic ladders (4m) for access to lofts.
What happens if you find a bat, or my property is suitable for bats?
If we find evidence of bats or the property (or structure) is suitable for roosting bats then we will need to provide sufficient information to the Local Planning Authority for them to assess the likely impact of your proposals. This would normally require additional survey effort (e.g. dusk and dawn presence/absence surveys).
When can I carry out the further surveys and will this delay my planning application?
Dusk and dawn surveys for active bats can be reliably undertaken between May and September. Local Planning Authorities will not normally process a planning application until all relevant survey information for bats has been obtained. We work closely with our clients to ensure that they plan ahead for surveys and don’t miss the crucial window of survey opportunity.
How much does a Bat Survey cost?
Dusk and dawn bat surveys are priced per project. The costs reflect the location of the site, the number of surveyors and the number of surveys required to satisfy the Local Planning Authority. We would be happy to provide a quote for these surveys should they be required.
What is a bat mitigation license?
If your proposals will affect either bats or their roost sites, then the works will need to be carried out under the terms of a European Protected Species (EPS) license. These are issued by Natural England and an application can normally only be made once full planning permission has been granted. The licence application will specify the precise measures (mitigation and compensation) that will be completed to ensure that there is no long-term detriment to the bats at your site. Focus Environmental Consultants are product to boast a 100% record of obtaining bat licenses to facilitate permitted developments on behalf of our clients.
Will bats stop me completing my project?
In our experience, almost certainly not. However, you may need to make some compromises in order to be sure of obtaining planning permission and any relevant licenses to complete the work.
What can I do to encourage bats?
All bats in the UK are protected by law and many are suffering long-term declines in range and population. This is primarily due to roost and habitat loss as well as intensification of agricultural practices. If you would like to make a difference and provide new habitats or roosting places for bats we would encourage you to visit the website of Bat Conservation Trust: www.bats.org.uk for further information.
* The above Bat Survey price is based on a standard daytime (Phase 1) bat survey, which would usually include a single residential property or built structure.

Director, Tetlow King Planning
I am very pleased to write on behalf of Tetlow King Planning in support of your recent work supporting an application and appeal for a recent large housing proposal at Calne, Wiltshire.
In my dealings with Focus Ecology I have found the team to be very organised, professional, focused, honest and quick to act. This was even more evident when working with Graham, as at all times you provided pragmatic advice tailored exactly to the client’s and site’s complex needs. Your work at the appeal hearing was a masterclass in how to deliver specialist advice in an open, informative and persuasive manner, getting buy-in from the Inspector, the local authority’s expert and interested parties in the face of stiff opposition. This carried on to the appeal site visit, in which the delivery of your expertise was central to showcasing how ecology can be effectively managed and development mitigated. This provided the client with the greatest chance of securing a valuable planning consent.
I have no hesitation in recommending you to our clients and look forward to working alongside you in the future.
Principal Planner, Zesta Planning
We’ve been working closely with the friendly team at Focus over the last year in relation to a greenfield housing development in Worcestershire. They have helped us to overcome obstacles at every stage of the process, from the initial validation of the application right through to the appeal which is currently being dealt with by public inquiry. The site presented a number of challenges including a range of protected species issues and priority habitats. Focus have played a pivotal role in the process and have ultimately helped us to secure a favourable recommendation from the Council’s Ecologist and design for substantial biodiversity net gains on site whilst maximising the site’s development potential. We’re looking froward to working with Nat, Graham and the rest of the team at Focus on future projects.
I am one very happy client!

Focus Environmental supported us on site whilst we removed the roof of our house. They conducted site surveys and a toolbox talk to ensure the builders fully understood what they needed to do if they found bats or nesting birds. Everyone who we dealt with was knowledgeable and helpful. I highly recommend Focus Environmental.
